Juicing, For Real

juicing-pros-and-cons

I decided to juice for three days because weight loss and bloating--mainly bloating. I've heard the stories: everything from, "It's the best thing ever!" to "I quit after 2 juices and went to get tacos."

I know I follow under the latter, but I needed to challenge myself. So how'd it go?

Day 1:
Juice 1: strawberries, spinach, apple, lime
Juice 2: kale, celery, apple, pineapple, lemon. Now I like kale.  Look at me advancing as a human!
Juice 3: cucumber, celery, strawberry, apple, ginger
Juice 4 (or smoothie): spinach, banana, pulp left over from

Non juice: Venti unsweetened green tea. If I don't think about how much I really want sweetener it's good. Green tea is supposed to help you burn more calories right? That means it's an appetite suppressant?

Activity: 30 minutes of (unexpected hot) detox yoga.

Thoughts--Day 1: After doing more work and yoga, I'm going to bed to stop myself from eating things like furniture.

Day 2:
Juice 1: spinach, ginger root, celery, apple, lime
Juice 2: kale, cucumbers, spinach, pineapple, coconut water
Juice 3: (smoothie): cashew milk, avocado, half banana, ice cubes
Juice 4: (smoothie): pulp from the juices earlier, half a banana. I can't get through it because it's so much pulp. Sticking it in the fridge for later tonight.
Juice 5: carrots (juiced), lemon, coconut water, the other half of that pulp smoothie.
Juice 6: cucumber, coconut water, kale, spinach, apple, ginger root (I think this is my favorite juice so far, oddly)

Activity: Light running and yoga.

Thoughts--Day 2: I'd get work done if I didn't have to go to the bathroom all the time. I'm also a tad cranky and I honestly just want to sleep. Wasn't this supposed to give me more energy? It feels like I have the flu (and yet I went running anyway). I want a sandwich. I want nachos. I want fries from Whataburger. I'm getting on the plane and heading South for Tex-Mex.

Day 3:
Juice 1: spinach, apple, cucumber, celery.
Juice 2: carrots, celery, limes, ginger, coconut water
Juice 3: (smoothie) raw almond milk, banana, half an avocado, pulp
Juice 4: carrots, pineapple, lime, ginger
Juice 5: (smoothie) same banana/cashew smoothie

Thoughts--Day 3: Meal planning. Tomorrow I'm going to make a farmer's market omelet (incorporating the pulp in the egg). I'm thawing out chicken. Roasting vegetables in the oven. Turn up whole foods. I've missed you in my body. Also, this headache is killer. It feels like I have the flu

Day 4: Oh you THOUGHT? I ate a bowl of oatmeal with apple pieces and I swear I feel like Jesus Christ gave me a hug internally.

End of juicing: Smoothies are life savors. The difference, if you don't know (I say this in my non condescending tone), juicing allows nutrients to get to your blood almost immediately because there's nothing getting in the way. It will unfortunately make you feel hungry faster (which is why you need 6 juices a day and tons of water). Smoothies, because it contains fibers (pulp) take a bit longer for nutrients to reach the bloodstream, but it keeps you fuller longer.

Will I juice again? Maybe for a day. Maybe two days after the holidays, but I'm definitely juicing with whole foods. I think I should have had my physical before doing it, because I don't feel the effects were normal I couldn't concentrate for the life of me and I kept feeling sick. There was never a "breakthrough."  Maybe it's supposed to come the fourth day, but I didn't have time or energy (literally) to wait.

And honestly, I felt awful. I felt 10 times better after I ate whole foods.

My taste buds are different though. Added sugars and salt (I also had a couple of tortilla chips) taste horrific. I can also so that I'm less bloated. If anything, this will allow me to eat healthy, because my body is like, "Nope."

Other side notes: I did not use organic vegetables, because I'm broke and it would double my grocery bill. Wash your veggies off with 1/4 cup vinegar and 2 cups water (or activated charcoal if you're super fancy) and you'll be fine.

Until next time,
C
